‘राजपूताना जहाज़’
बंबई में आज सबेरे से ही चहल-पहल थी। महात्मा जी कुछ काल के लिए भारतवर्ष में न रहेंगे, सबके चेहरे से यही भाव झलक रहा था। मुझे तो सद्भाग्य से ही यह संयोग मिल गया है कि जिस बोट से गांधी जी और मालवीयजी जाते हैं, उसी से मैं भी जा रहा हूँ। जब जहाज़ में जगह ली थी, तब तो यह निश्चित था कि महात्मा जी आर.टी.सी. में ना जाएँगे, किंतु विधि ने तो पहले से ही निश्चित कर रखा था कि गांधी जी को विलायत जाना है और ‘विधि का रचा मेटनहारा?'
बंगले से चलकर बंदर पर पहुँचा तो फ़ोटो लेने वाले पागल दर्जनों के तादात में मुझ पर टूट पड़े। न मालूम कितने प्लेट उन्होंने बर्बाद किए। पच्चीस से कम तो न थे। स्वदेशी धन को विदेश इस तरह भेजा जाता है! आख़िर मेरे फ़ोटो की क़ीमत?
जहाज़ पर सवार होने के थोड़ी ही देर बाद महात्मा गांधी की जयध्वनी से आकाश गूँज उठा। बस सब लोग समझ गए कि गांधी जी आ रहे है। सारे जहाज़ में चहल-पहल मच गई। क्या हिंदुस्तानी, क्या अंग्रेज़, स्त्री पुरुष दौड़-दौड़ कर मौक़े के स्थान पर क़ब्ज़ा जमाने लगे। बंदर से आधी मील की दूरी तन के सभी मकानों की छते खचाखच भरी थी। चारों ओर से जय-जय! जहाज़ के ऊपर पहुँचने में महात्मा जी को काफ़ी कष्ट हुआ। मगर अंग्रेज़ मल्लाहों ने किसी तरह हाथों की बाड़ बना कर ऊपर तक पहुँचाया और सुरक्षित स्थान में खड़ा कर दिया। वहीं से किनारे के लोगों को महात्मा जी दर्शन देते रहे। क्या विचित्र दृश्य था! आर. टी. सी. में जो लोग पहले गए थे वे जनता के प्रतिनिधि हैं, या एक मन वज़न का दुबले-पतले शरीर वाला गांधी प्रतिनिधि है, इस बात की गवाही लोगो का भाव दे रहा था। इतने में ही थोड़ी-थोड़ी वर्षा होने लगी। मानो इंद्र भी विदाई के आँसू बहा रहा था। किंतु लोग अपनी जगह से न हटे। जहाज़ का घंटा हुआ। फिर दूसरा घंटा हुआ। तीसरा घंटा हो जाने पर लोगों को स्मरण हुआ कि आख़िर में हमें जहाज़ से उतरना है। वे किनारे उतरे, मगर आँखें सबकी गांधी जी कि ओर लगी थी। वल्लभभाई के चेहरे पर विषाद था। जवाहरलालजी के चेहरे पर मुस्कुराहट। पंडित जी अभी पहुँचे भी न थे। सब लोग पूछते थे— “मालवीय जी अभी नहीं आए?” आख़िर ऐन मौक़े पर पहुँचे।
जहाज़ ने लंगर उठाया और धीरे-धीरे सरका, तब कहीं पता लगा कि हम लोग जाने वाले है। रामेश्वर, ब्रजमोहन रुमाल हिला-हिला कर संकेत कर रहे थे। पर में तो विचित्र दशा में गोते खा रहा था। एल छोटे-से दुबले पतले आदमी ने लोगों को कैसा मोहित कर लिया है, इसी पर विचार कर रहा था। किंतु जहाज़ चलने लगा तो याद पड़ा कि जा रहा हूँ। ज्यों-ज्यों जहाज़ और किनारे के बीच का अंतराय बढ़ता गया, त्यों-त्यों मन तेज़ी के साथ किनारे की ओर दौड़ लगाने लगा। शायद किनारे के लोगों की भी यही हालत थी। आख़िर आँखों ने काम देना बंद कर दिया और लोगो को पहचानना भी मुश्किल हो गया। तब कानों से जयनाद सुनते रहे। अंत में तो समुद्र का खूं-खूं रह गया। हिंदुस्तान का तो अब नामुनिशान भी नहीं। चारों तरफ़ पानी-ही-पानी और उसके बीच हमारी छोटी-सी दुनिया— “राजपूताना जहाज़!”

jahaz par maryada pray; bhang ho gai hai 1927 mein main aaya tha to kapDon ka swang rachna paDa tha raat ke kapDe, din ke kapDe, pura jhamela tha ghanta bhar to prayah kapDe badalne mein hi lagta tha dhoti kurta pahanna to mano gunah tha ab ki ber ye haal hai ki dhoti kurte wale jahaz par bekhatak phirte hai na to coat puchhne wala hai, na kisi ko sankoch hai mujhe ab malum hone laga hai ki apne dhuti kurte chhoD aaya, ye galti hui jahaz ke musafi, kaptan waghairah bhi dhoti kurte ko bardasht kar lete hai yon to unhen bura hi lagta hoga, par shimle ka adesh hai ka gandhi ke aram ka dhyan rakho, isiliye sab kuch bardasht kar lete hai
panDit ji ke liye chulha alag ban gaya hai gangajal bhi sath hai mitti ka kanastar, swadeshi sabun, dataunon ka baDa sa banDal udhar gandhi ji ka charkha, pijan, baDi baDi wichitr chizen sath chhal rahi hai jahaz wale bhi dekhte hai ki ye shiwji ki barat achchhi i aate jate tirchhi nazar Dal jate hai, par upar se pura adab dikhate hai
